EVENING DRESSES FOR YOUR MOST IMPORTANT SOCIAL OCCASIONS

Of all of the dress styles, evening dresses are by far the most popular. Today’s evening dresses are indeed inspired from past history and deeply rooted in the foundations of the most important social occasions in society. Interestingly the term "evening dresses" originated from the 16th & 17th centuries. The original term for evening dresses was a court dress in which members of the nobility class would dress for prestigious social occasions like fancy court dinner parties, dances, elaborate balls and attending the theatre emerging in the 15th century. Evening dresses were originally made from silk and featured heavily embellished embroidery patterns and intricate beading patterns. Bright beautiful colors were reserved exclusively for nobility in those times. Evening dresses were also sometimes referred to dinner gowns reflecting the importance of court dinner parties as a pinnacle event of high class social circles. Thank goodness for the French Revolution, it was the key transitional event in history that broke through to allow the commoner to share in the delights of wearing formal attire and evening dresses. What would have once been financially out of reach for most women in society is now common place and affordable; the evening dress.

Not much has changed in the “intention” of evening dresses, the goal is still to get dressed up in your finest attire, see and be seen and wear beautiful luxurious fabrics for our most formal occasions. In the 19th century, evening gowns became increasingly popular to dress up for the opera and common place in the 20th century for formal events like the Red Carpet, charity balls and galas, high society social functions, affairs of state and government, military balls, beauty pageants, proms and the most regal  social occasions.

EVENING DRESSES COME IN A VARIETY OF LENGTHS

These days, evening dresses come in a variety of lengths from tea to floor length, although, the most formal events truly call for a floor length evening dress either worn with or without a train. Typically a train pronounces the formality of an evening dress. If an event has a receiving line or red carpet entrance, it is a good indicator that an evening dress with a train is the preferred attire.  Tea length evening dresses can be worn for all morning or mid-day events and be considered totally appropriate attire for formal events being held that time of day. Tea length is also appropriate for most outdoor functions and any event being held on grass turf. Floor length evening dresses are considered appropriate attire for all Black Tie functions. However, the etiquette for White Tie events still call for full skirted ball gown styles in most cases. Specifically, at White Tie events ball gowns should be worn in floor length only.

EVENING DRESSES COME IN ALL FABRICS

Evening dresses of today are available in a vast variety of fantastic fabric options. Evening dresses can be either worn close to the body and feature clean lines or remain voluminous constructed of stiffer fabrics like taffeta, organza or heavier satin poly fabrics. Modern evening dresses are available in contemporary fabrics like sequins or fully beaded styles as well. Truly the importance is no longer just the fabric choice, it is all about your personal style and making a fashion statement all your own. If you are attending any event that features a Red carpet, typically you can expect significant photo opportunities present to partake in. This is an important factor to consider when selecting your evening dress fabric. You want to choose both a style and fabric that photograph well and flatter you from every camera angle.

Another point to consider is how long you will be wearing your evening dress at your event? If your event calls for dancing or a heavy amount of movement, you will want to consider this in the selection of whether you have a dress with a train and the length of the train you select. Many evening formal events have both the “main event” and the “after party event.” If your event has two segments as such, you may want to consider two dresses. One statement dress for the Red Carpet or receiving line and a second more bodycon type style to party and dance the night away in a comfortable stretch mesh or knit jersey fabric for the ultimate in comfort and movability! Usually both dresses should be evening dresses in split events with a formal event first followed by an after party.

WHAT IS THE PERFECT EVENING DRESS SILHOUETTE?

We are often asked this question. Truly, the best silhouette is the one that looks the best on your body type. You can find our recommendations for each dress silhouette on the description block on each product page. We rate every dress for what body types we recommend that particular dress to flatter. Outside of White Tie events, there is no specific dress silhouette required for formal events. This gives you the liberty to select the silhouette that looks the best on your frame. If you want to shop by body silhouette, you can use our Dream Dress Filtering Tool on the left navigation on every category page and select your specific body type. When you click search, the dresses will sort by your specific body frame. You can shop by body frame or by the dress silhouette as well. This tool is extremely helpful if you are looking for a certain shape or style for your dress and you want only our recommendations for the dresses we know will flatter your figure best!

HOW DO I KNOW HOW FANCY MY EVENING DRESS SHOULD BE?

Typically all formal events present attendees with an invitation to attend. On most invitations if there is an expected dress code for the event, it is specifically called out on the invitation. Some events have historical context and do not present the expected dress code on the invitation because it is expected that attendees know about the event from the historical context of the event. The best way to know what to wear if you are a first time attendee of a formal event is to look to social media as a research resource. Look for pictures from the past events to check the level of formality expected in the dresses worn by attendees. As a rule of thumb, it is hard to over dress when evening dresses are the standard for ladies because in today’s day and age, it is all about personal style. Additionally, we believe it is always better to be slightly over dressed than under dressed! You will certainly feel more comfortable being the best dressed verses the one who didn’t come dressed appropriately. If your invitation reads Black Tie, After 5, Red Carpet or has any tie to a ball or gala, an evening dress is certainly expected attire.
