SEMI-FORMAL DRESSES

You’re wondering about semi-formal dresses, which can be a lot of fun to pick out as you truly can express your style personality! Since semi-formal means clothing that is more versatile to all occasions and not too overdone. But what exactly does a semi-formal dress entail? Good question. Truth is, semi-formal dresses aren’t an exact science. There’s more room for personal interpretation. Generally speaking, if you’re considering semi-formal dresses, don’t go for the full-length gown. Truthfully, that’s really the only hard and fast rule for semi-formal dresses. Long styles are reserved primarily for formal events. Semi-formal dresses are by far the most flexible of all of the styles as you can easily dress them up and down.

IS SEMI-FORMAL CONSIDERED COCKTAIL?

Semi-formal dresses are another way of say “short” or “cocktail.” Silk, satin, crepe, lace and velvet are all perfectly appropriate semi-formal dresses. When it comes to fabric choices, just remember that semi-formal dresses should be comfortable, but not casual. Think of the elegance of a long dress in a short style. Semi-formal in itself calls for the expectation that the style choice will be something more than a casual short church dress, summer dress or simple dress look. Most often if there is an invitation to an event, the expectation would be semi-formal or above for preferred attire. Semi-formal dresses are usually appropriate for weddings after 2pm, cocktail parties, holiday shindigs, celebrations that have a sit down meal and of course and most evening events where cocktails are being served in a party atmosphere.  Of course, most school dances like Homecoming, Winter Ball, Snow Ball, Tolo, Sadie Hawkins and some Junior Proms require semi-formal dress code. And don’t forget graduation from both high school and college – especially if there are party festivities to follow the graduation event.

SEMI-FORMAL DRESSES COME IN ALMOST ALL STYLE OPTIONS

In our semi-formal dresses collection you will find simple styles that are more about beautiful flowing fabrics, beaded styles that display intricate patterns and elaborate figure flattering designs, full sequin short styles that scream party, corset styles that are fun & flirty, sexy semi-formal styles that are body hugging in fitted fabrics and the classic version of the LBD that is everyone’s go to party dress with a little extra bling or slim svelte style.

The dress classification of being “semi-formal” mostly speaks to the length of the dress – not the style. You have the full freedom of choice for selecting a style that expresses your personality if your event calls for a semi-formal dress. Events with themes are always fun to attend as your semi-formal dress can reflect the theme and be a complement to the party atmosphere. This is especially true if you are the lucky hostess for the party! There is no better way to transcend a theme than be the best dressed decoration at your party! If you are still in the party planning stages, you can let your dress dictate the decorations color palate and build your theme around your dress choice.

For some excellent party ideas and dressing for specific themes, you can see many recommendations in our dresses by Themes category. Additionally, we have some wonderful styling, hairstyle and make-up ideas on our Christellas Blog. You can find pictorial “how-to’s” for hair and make-up there as well as great video clips for styling ideas for semi-formal dresses.

WHEN IS SEMI-FORMAL APPROPRIATE ATTIRE?

The more you know about the event you are attending, the easier it will be to select your semi-formal dress. Do your homework. There is nothing worse than showing up too casual to an event that other attendees have “dressed” for.  You will find a variety of scale in our semi –formal dress collection both in level of “bling” and price. Use our Dream Dress Builder tools on the left side of our category page to navigate your countless options. Many invitations call out the dress code in advance, so read the fine print on any invitation you receive to verify the expected dress code. If in doubt, do yourself a favor and reach out to the hostess for style advice. There is nothing worse than the hostess having party planning expectations and having attendees come in less than expected attire when you have planned a party for semi-formal dresses and above. Or worse yet, for you to be the guest who didn’t read the fine print and crash the party in inappropriate attire.

If your event happens annually you can always creep on last year’s social media to see what other attendees wore for the big party event. Pictures are worth a thousand words and this certainly holds true for doing your homework when it comes to dress code. Take all the guesswork out of your wardrobe planning and do your research in advance. We have semi-formal dresses to fit every party theme and level of formality to meet your dress needs. Knowing what others wore last year can also help you to find a special semi-formal dress that stands out in the crowd and captures the camera!

WE’RE HERE TO HELP YOU FIND YOUR IDEAL SEMI-FORMAL DRESS!

Just remember, with semi-formal dresses you’re definitely dressing to impress, you will find an extensive selection of semi-formal dresses in our 2016 collection. Remember, if you have questions, just ask! We’re here to assist you in any way we can to help you find the perfect dress for your special event.

Our semi-formal dresses come from size 00-24 in regular sizes and plus 14w-30w. Remember to take accurate measurements in order to get the closest fit possible in your dress. As a rule of thumb, semi-formal dresses run on the small size number wise – so do not be alarmed or attached to the sizing number.  Dress sizing can run distinctively different between all of the different designers. What matters most is that the measurements are as close to your ACTUAL measurements as possible. If you are between sizes, it is always best to “size up” and select one dress size larger. It is much easier to make a dress smaller than larger. If you need assistance discovering your size properly, you can watch our sizing video or call to ask us for assistance.
