SHORT FORMAL DRESSES
Much like their companion version in the long style, short formal dresses top our list of most requested styles. Although, the question is often asked, “how do I know if the style I chose is formal enough?” Traditionally there are two terms that refer to short formal dresses, formal and semi-formal. However, these two styles are not worn interchangeably. They are two distinct styles and worn as appropriate attire for different events.
WHAT MAKES A SHORT DRESS FORMAL (enough)?
The nuances of dress code expectations can sometimes be tricky to navigate. The term short formal dresses is one that people use with much liberty; mostly referring to this style in terms of length not the actual style of the dress. This can certainly be confusing and potentially lead to dressing mistakes if a dress code is involved.
Typically, short formal dresses can be distinguished by the elements of decoration and embellishments of the dress or the style being considered Red Carpet worthy. Initially the more elaborate the embellishments are on a dress, the more fancy and formal it appears. As a result of the beading and appliques on the dress, it appears more refined and therefore, considered more formal. For instance, a fully beaded short style would be considered far more formal than a simple plain chiffon dress without any beading adornment. Think about the the historical reference of the “queen’s” wardrobe. The queen would be wearing the most decorated gown of all in social settings and typically wearing highly embellished garments has been a way to communicate wealth, position, prestige and power throughout the ages. This holds true when referencing the true and literal understanding of short formal dresses.
In today’s terms, the perception of this style is a loose concept. However, when your invitation calls for short formal dresses, there is certainly an expectation to dress appropriately by the host or hostess. Dress code remains an important part of many cultural events around the world. Wearing a casual or “church dress” style when an invitation calls for formal styles in either long or short can be a fashion faux pas you don’t want to be guilty of making.
Semi formal styles are typically considered simple or plain styles. In terms of school dances, the semi formal style can mean a wide range of styles from simple bridesmaid type dresses to super fancy styles with lots of bling beading and embellishments. For proper social occasions however, you want to hit the mark and not group all short styles into this general classification as best practice.
Red Carpet worthy styles in short formal dresses are typically dresses that have a considerable statement in either their style, trend or fabrication. Think of Red Carpet short formal dresses as dresses that are meant to make a significant impression. Typically stars wearing this style of short formal dresses are looking to capture the camera, be talked about in the media for making a “fashion win” and to make a lasting fashion impression. If your formal event includes a red carpet or reception line with photographers present, you may want to consider wearing a statement style in the fashion of the celebrities and style stars alike.
WHEN IN DRESS CODE DOUBT - CHECK YOUR INVITATION OR CHAT UP THE HOSTESS
If you have been invited to a shindig requiring wearing a short formal dress, to avoid the fashion pitfalls of being under dressed or not dressed appropriately; it is always best to check the invitation for a point of reference or chat up your host/hostess to inquire regarding dress code expectations. We have learned over the years with thousands upon thousands of in-store customers, people don’t usually throw an event or party without an expectation for their guests to “dress.” So there is no shame in asking for clarification regarding the expected dress code with a simple call to chat about the party or text. Short formal dresses come in such a wide range of styles, you have countless options to meet whatever the dress code dictates accordingly. As a simple rule of thumb, we subscribe to the opinion that it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Error on the side of excess. Another way you can successfully discover the expected dress code is to look at past social media pictures of the event if it has been held previously. There is also no shame in creeping social media to make sure that you can make an informed decision when selecting your short formal dress. Better to self educate than make an uneducated guess and show up underdressed.
We have grouped together a significant collection of short formal dresses that span the range of super formal to more classic styles that are more appropriate for daytime events, as well as simple parties and dinner events since our customers tend to group so many different events that qualify for the term short formal dresses.
