LONG FORMAL DRESSES ARE RICH IN HISTORY

In documented history long formal dresses really got their start with the inception of the King’s Court in the 14th and 15th centuries. Once referred to as court dresses, long formal dresses have made a journey through the ages with the recording of elaborate dresses made of the finest fabrics of the day being worn for the affairs of the King’s Court from gala balls to theater performances. Although there is documented history of all the country’s “queens” dressing elaborately from the beginning of recorded time, the 14th century was really the time in which the upper echelon of society’s women began dressing in elegant and refined attire on a regular basis. Fashions through the ages have of course drastically changed and morphed to meet the styles of the times. However, long formal dresses solidified their place in history and became a significant part of “dressing” for special events as a standard over 500 years ago. As wealth has become more distributed among the classes, long formal dresses became more and more accessible to to wear to all who could afford them. In today’s terms, MANY of the dresses that we carry would at one time be only fit for the queen and taken months upon months to create. With modern day manufacturing and world economic prosperity, you too, can be dressed like a queen!

DIFFERENT EVENTS CALL FOR DIFFERENT LEVELS OF FORMALITY

Long formal dresses certainly come in a vast variety of levels of formality - almost as many as styles from which to choose! We are often asked “how formal should I dress?” by our in-store customers - and truly every event calls for its own level of dress. Typically, if the event you are attending calls for Black or White Tie, Formal After 5, Formal or Affairs of State and Military Dress, you can be assured that your formal long dress needs are among the most “formal” of all. For events with the highest level of formality, truly a train is not considered optional. Trains convey the highest level of formal dress presentation. Even if your train is just a “break train” where the train just breaks the floor at the hemline behind you or a “demi-train” which is typically 6-4 inches behind you when standing. These still count as trains. So don’t be alarmed that you will have a heavy or long load of a train dragging behind you. Selecting a style with an “easy walk train” can make all the difference in movability.

Long formal dresses with trains can also have the train “tamed.” So don’t rule out a certain style if you love the dress, but feel that the train is too long or could potentially be too cumbersome to maneuver about. Trains can always be shortened on long formal dresses for ease of movement and height requirements. Trains do not have to be trip hazards. One tip we have found most helpful throughout our styling experiences is to PRACTICE walking in your dress with a train BEFORE the night of your event. Especially if you have never worn a long formal dress with a train before and if your event has any type of Red Carpet or reception line welcoming events. Practice makes perfect and you want to make walking in your gown look effortless.

Another way to know exactly how formal your event dress requirements are is to look at social media pictures of the event when previously held. We have found it is always better to be slightly overdressed than the person who arrives crashing the party under dressed for the event. This can be especially embarrassing when there is press or paparazzi present taking photographs. Double check your event invitation to verify the dress code and if possible, double check with the host or host if no dress code is called out on the invitation, but you know wearing long formal dresses is expected and appropriate.
