FORMAL DRESSES

Formal dresses are worn when the dress code of an event calls for such attire, like at a wedding, fancy party, school dance, military or political event or formal social occasion. Initially formal dresses were established as black and white attire due to men's suit options. However, this terminology in referring to formal dresses has grown to encompass all colors as well as black and white options. Formal dresses are always considered floor length. Formal events give us the opportunity to get dressed up fancy and truly express our personal style. These special events are usually the hallmark of our annual social calendar and something to truly look forward to attending. Shopping for formal dresses and finding the perfect dress is easy with Christellas. We have done all the hard work for you. Below you will find some commonly asked questions that our customers often ask our Stylists about formal dresses and some helpful common etiquette for attending formal events.

FORMAL DRESSES COME IN ALMOST ALL SILHOUETTES

Formal dresses encompass all of the body silhouettes, as well as fabric options these days. There is no set standard outside of the formal dress being floor length. You can select a dress with out without a train, either is considered appropriate for a formal event. If you are attending an evening event hosted for a political purpose, Red Carpet event or high class function, a formal dress with a train is an absolutely appropriate option. Formal dresses with trains typically come in almost every fabric and beaded style. There are many annual functions that call for formal ball gowns as well. Formal dresses in the ball gown are timeless and appropriate for every age. Throughout the ages, the ball gown has actually been the standard in which all formal dresses were judged. Think of the queen - - and dress like her too!  Ball gowns are not just for prom. They have a historical legacy dating back to the foundations of the monarchy across the ages. Of course, the modern day princess is another inspiration to select your formal dress.

FORMAL DRESSES COME IN EVERY FABRIC OPTION TOO

Fabric and embellishments can certainly make a difference in how formal a dress may appear. Consider the dress code requirements of your event when making your selection. To achieve a more traditional look, select a fabric that has structure like taffeta, organza and thicker satins. Formal dresses with structured fabric have a look uniquely their own. Many fit and flare formal dresses and A-line styles look exceptional in these fabrics. Chiffon formal dresses are staple and you can hardly go wrong with this choice. We have every shape and silhouette from size 00-24 in regular sizes and 14w-32w in this fabric in this collection. Fomral dresses that are fully beaded or in full sequins can certainly stand out and offer a level of elegance only found in beaded gown styles. If you have an eye to stand out in the crowd or are the guest of honor. Beaded styles are ideal for catching the attention of the crowd and keep the cameras on you.

Keep in mind that formal dresses can be covered in beading or a more simple style that focuses on the clean lines of the dress with special attention given to ruching and the direction in which the fabric is tailored. If you have a more classic style and prefer something that focuses on the styling and construction of the dress, consider taking your accessories up a notch. Typically formal dresses that lean towards plain or simple are worn with exaggerated accessories like statement necklaces, long chandelier earrings and almost always a cuff bracelet or large cocktail ring. When choosing a formal dress that is full encrusted with jewels, gem stones, beading or sequins, think about matching your accessories to compliment the dress. Select accessories that call attention ot the main event - your dress. If you go over board on accessories with a decorated or embellished dress, you can give an outlandish appearance. Complimentary accessories for this style are best.

THE MOST FORMAL EVENTS CALL FOR GLOVES

Believe it or not, there are many formal events that call for ladies to wear gloves with formal dresses. Political events, charity balls, affairs of state and country, international events and galas remain popular events to wear gloves with formal dresses. The length of the glove is dictated by the formality of the event. There are glove options in a variety of fabrics in lace, illusion mesh, velvet and the traditional satin style. Glove lengths are above the elbow length or opera length, 3/4 length and mid arm length. It is common practice to wear gloves upon entrance to any formal event, for staged photo opportunities and while leaving the event. If you are in doubt about when your gloves should be on, take your lead from the hostess of the event and follow her example.

Of course, you can ALWAYS wear gloves to an event that does not have them as a part of the dress code should you choose to take your formal dress look to a whole new level. Gloves add a level of formality to any style and allow a pop of color or complimentary color accent as a nice touch if you have chosen a more classic clean look to your dress. Should you elect to add gloves to your formal dress look, you make all the rules on how long and for what activities you wear them for. As a general rule, long gloves are worn for late afternoon and evening events.

WHEN IN DOUBT, CHECK THE INVITATION OR RESEARCH

As a rule of thumb, formal dresses are typically called out on the invitation of the event. Often formal dresses are called out for black and white tie events as well. This is a popular way to let event attendees know that the occasion is indeed formal requiring for a tux or suit for men and floor length formal dresses for the ladies.

If you are attending a formal event for the first time and are not sure of the level of formality expected in attire, it is always a smart idea to do some social media research and look at pictures from the previous year. You can then appropriately select a gown that meets the dress code expectations. If you are friendly with the hostess, you can always ask for a little advice of attire as well. Lastly, we always encourage customers to over dress rather than under dress for formal events. There is always someone who will be the "bell of the ball" and "talk of the town" with their gown. Maybe that person is YOU?!? It is so much fun to get dressed up and show your personal style through fashion.
